Archival Collection Conservation Intern (Spring and Summer 2026)
Reports to: Executive Director
Works closely with: Executive Director, Alabama School of Math and Science Research Fellows
Overview: The Archival Collection and Conservation Intern will assist the Executive Director in designing and implementing a plan to reorganize the archival collections of the Mobile Medical Museum to make them more manageable and efficient for staff access. The project will include a complete inventory of the museum’s archives, relabeling and systematically organizing all storage boxes and files, and digitally scanning a select number of materials that have high value for research or that are rapidly deteriorating. This is a temporary, part-time position funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) for the Spring 2026 and Summer 2026 semesters. Applicants should specify if they are interested in working one or both semesters.
Eligibility: The position is open to third- and fourth-year undergraduate students, recent college graduates, and graduate students.
Duties and responsibilities:

Attend in-person and virtual planning meetings with project team.

Inventory all archival items according to museum protocols.

Record inventory data on paper files and in PastPerfect database.

Research archival items that need to be identified.

Report urgent conservation needs to Executive Director.

Work with Executive Director to identify high-value items for digital scanning.

Scan selected archival items according to museum protocols.

Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
-
Frequent ascending/descending of stairs to access second-floor archive rooms and administrative offices.
-
Occasional ascending/descending of ladder to access storage shelves.
-
Frequent moving of storage boxes and objects weighing up to 50 pounds from one room or shelf to another.

Frequent positioning of self to access storage boxes and objects on the floor and lower shelves and in narrow closets and walkways.

Frequent operation of computers, printers, scanners, and other office productivity machinery, including a stapler, hole puncher, and label maker.
Other Requirements:

Strong writing and organizational skills.

Attention to detail while working independently.

Passion for learning and educating others about the history of medicine.

Must be available to work a minimum of ten hours per week, for a total of 150 hours per semester, for the Spring 2026 and/or Summer 2026 semesters. Hours will be scheduled with Executive Director prior to start of internship.

Vehicle insurance and valid driver’s license as some local travel is required.
Compensation: $15/hour. This position does not offer benefits.
